Artificial Souls
Mezzotint
Engravings by Carol Wax
On
view July 29 - August 23, 2010

"My
animistic images of old
typewriters, sewing machines,
electric fans, telephones,
optical devices, vintage fabric
and other objects of everyday
life reflect my experience of
the ordinary as extraordinary.
Working in a realistic style, I
iconize these objects. As icons
in Netherlandish still-life art
symbolized the impermanence of
beauty, my subjects symbolize
the transient nature of
industrial ingenuity. In this
way, I contemplate how objects
evolve from state-of-the-art to
artifact to art.
"The ability to render dramatic
lighting effects through the
mezzotint engraving process
makes it the ideal medium for
realizing my phantasmagorical
visions. Strong chiaroscuro and
cartoonish mannerisms help
anthropomorphize industrial
artifacts, rendering them as
fantastic creatures or Rube
Goldberg-esque bizarreries.
Incorporating undulating
textiles further blurs
distinctions between
manufactured and organic forms,
or camouflages and transforms
living beings into inert objects
or surreal landscapes. By
exploring the anima in inanimate
objects, I create images not of
still life but of unstill
life." - Carol Wax
