Maids’ Dining Room
In addition to relatively private bedrooms, the Young family provided a separate dining room and lounge for their staff to enjoy. It incorporated dining and relaxation areas and boasted a private bath and toilet. These were important changes for a house that had not previously offered private spaces for servants, and the design and construction of these rooms reflected the increased competition for staff members at the big houses on the Hudson. To retain talented servants, the Youngs had to provide better living accommodations and pay better wages than ever before.
