C-0108
Paper mache with mother-of-pearl inlays and gilt decorations. Retailed by Tiffany, Young & Ellis. Rectangular box fitted with a writing tray and compartments for sewing, mother-of-pearl and silver fittings, raised on a turned baluster, and a rectangular base with concave sides and scrolled feet. According to Annette Innis Young (Diary entry, February 6, 1932), this work table was a gift from Martha Smith Innis (1792-1867) to her daughter-in-law Anne Bevier Hasbrouck Innis (1827-1906) on the occasion of Anne’s marriage in 1855. Anne grew up at Locust Lawn in Gardiner NY, and moved to #40 Main Street, Poughkeepsie after her marriage to George Innis. Anne Innis bequeathed the table to her daughter Martha Innis Young (1856 -1946), who bequeathed it to her daughter, Annette Innis Young (1885-1975), who bequeathed it to Locust Grove.
